Tour of the Bruce Power nuclear power plant in Ontario.

Yesterday (2025-9-9), I had the privilege of joining a tour of the Bruce Power nuclear power plant in Ontario on the sidelines of an International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) workshop in Hamilton. On the shore of Lake Huron in southern Ontario, Bruce Power is one of the largest nuclear power plants in the world, supplying about 30% of Ontario’s electricity.

Although the tour was focused on radiation protection, which is taken extremely seriously, it was hard not to be impressed by the plant’s role in global healthcare.

Practically all of the world’s supply of Lutetium-177 used in prostate cancer treatment comes from Bruce Power and almost half of the single-use medical instruments in the world are sterilized by its Cobalt-60. This is not to mention its vital and long-standing role in supplying Cobalt-60 for external beam radiotherapy…
