Congratulations to James Manalad for his first post-COVID in-person conference presentation! James presented his poster entitled “On the Monte Carlo simulation of neutron-induced direct and indirect DNA damage to estimate neutron relative biological effectiveness”, which was the subject of his MSc project.
John Kildea and Tarek Hijal presented Opal and the Quebec SmartCare Consortium in an invited presentation at the Semaine NumériQC 2022 conference in Quebec City. John was present in person and Tarek presented virtually.
John Kildea and Kayla O’Sullivan-Steben presented the Quebec SmartCare Consortium project and the use of the mCODE data standard in Opal’s prototype radiotherapy menu to the monthly CodeX Community of Practice.

The Laurie J. Hendren Scholarship is a scholarship that was created to honor the memory of Prof. Laurie Hendren who co-founded the Opal Health Informatics Group. Funding for two undergraduate students to work on projects related to the Opal patient portal is being offered by the Cedars Cancer Foundation.
Recently, McGill PhD student Kayla O’Sullivan-Steben presented her research to the public as part of a video call hosted by the CodeX Radiation Therapy Treatment Data workgroup at HL7 International. Kayla showed how she is working to integrate radiation therapy treatment information for patients into Opal using the mCODE oncology data standard. Although still in the development phase, the project is very exciting!
Following the announcement of the Quebec SmartCare Consortium, John interviewed with the MUHC Foundation’s Health Matters Podcast. During the interview, John explained the concept of patient-centered data and why it is so important.
